Year of Wonders Book Discussion Group

Year of Wonders Book Discussion Group In-Person

Please join us on Zoom to discuss the bookYear of Wonders” by Geraldine Brooks on Monday, January 25, 2021 at 6:30 pm. This was Ms.Brooks’first novel, having written two nonfiction books previously, “The Nine Parts of Desire” and “Foreign Correspondent.”

In his review of the book in the August 26, 2001 issue of the New York Times, John Vernon states, “Brooks has clearly done her homework, ….she gives us what we want from historical fiction: a glimpse into the strangeness of history that simultaneously enables us to see a reflection of ourselves.”

Alfred Hickling writes in the July 14, 2001 edition of The Guardian, “Most historical novelists would have difficulty imagining the near-extermination of an entire community. Brooks doesn't have to. She is acutely aware that a litany of grisly deaths loses its impact after a while, and uses her experience as a chronicler of contemporary disasters to tell the story of those lucky - or unlucky - enough to survive. Year of Wonders is a tale of fragile hope pitted against overwhelming disaster. Like the flaring rosettes of the bubonic rash, it gets under the skin of what it means to be human.”
